The York Karate squad headed up to East Durham College, in Peterlee, to compete in the North East Open Championships. The event is organised and run by Hartlepool Wadokai and is always an excellent event.
With many of the squad members away on holiday, it was down to our 10 man team to step up to the plate. First on the medal table was Amy Tegetmeier, who secured a bronze medal in individual kata. This was closely followed by Finlay Roe who also earned bronze in individual kata.
Events then moved swiftly on to kumite. Sam Peacock fought extremely well against some very tough opponents to reach the semi-finals and earn himself a bronze medal. Harry look on spectacular form in his very tough and competitive category to also win a bronze medal. Finally, Callum Stead, Kieran Morris and Sam Peacock competed in the team kumite but came across and excellent CEK team in the semi-finals, consequently coming home with the bronze medals.
Harry was seconded into a Hartlepool team kumite event as they were a competitor short. Harry had to win on several ocassions to keep the team in the competition but ultimately couldn't find an extra point in the last 5 seconds of the final for the gold and so had to settle for silver.
Some medals won and an excellent warm-up for those travelling to Dublin next weekend for the JKS World Championships. The squad will next be in action at the NISSAN Championships in Sunderland on the 20th October.
